When the weather starts to change, your tires need extra attention. Driving on worn tires can be very dangerous, especially on slick roads. Taking a few minutes out of your day to check your tires can keep you and your family safe throughout the year.
How Seasons Affect Your Tires
Temperature changes can do a lot to your tires. In the summer, hot pavement can cause rubber to break down faster. In the winter, cold temperatures make rubber stiffer and less flexible. Drivers in Vernon, CT see these changes every year as the seasons shift. Checking your tires helps you stay prepared no matter what the weather looks like outside.
Checking Your Tire Tread
Tire tread helps water and snow move away from your tires so you can grip the road better. When tread gets too low, your car can slip and slide. One way to check your tread is with a quarter. Place the quarter into the groove with Washington's head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, it may be time for new tires. Many car owners in Manchester, CT check their tread before winter storms roll in.
Tire Pressure and Your Safety
Keeping the right amount of air in your tires is just as important as having good tread. Low tire pressure can cause poor gas mileage and make steering harder. High pressure can lead to blowouts. Checking your tire pressure once a month is a good habit. Drivers from Enfield, CT often stop by our service center to have their pressure checked before long trips.
Rotating Your Tires
Tire rotation means moving your tires to different positions on your car. This helps them wear evenly and last longer. Most mechanics suggest rotating your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Car owners in Hartford, CT schedule regular rotations to get more life out of their tires.
